The modern world depends -- and by that I mean "to stay alive" -- on cheap and reliable transportation.
For foodstuffs and the inputs to CREATE foodstuffs
For medicines, including those like insulin needed for many to stay alive
For the zillion inputs required to make computer chips
For the other zillion inputs required to make the rest of the computer and computer-like products
For oil and natural gas
For oil and gas derivatives (gasoline, diesel, plastics -- really, think about how many things are made from oil or gas, including nitrogen fertilizer)
Did I mention food?
