The leaves and milky stems taste disgusting! I have heard that if you actually want to eat them then you can grow them under a plant pot to restrict the light, the leaves are then a much more mild colour and taste.
Also very diuretic - when I was a kid we were warned that picking the flowers would make us wet the bed.
