"The ruined city is one of today's great archaeological enigmas and is sometimes called "Atlantis", the "eighth wonder of the world," or the "Venice of the Pacific". The island's inhabitants talk about the ancient builders of Nan Madol being twin sorcerers who were exceedingly taller than the islanders. This place definitely appears to be an important place to look at.
I was lucky enough to travel there a few years ago. I'd known about the place for 20+ years and have been intrigued ever since first reading about it.
While exploring Nan Madol, my friends and I were the only ones there. We spent half a day boating through the channels of the gargantuan multitude of structures and explored many nooks and crannies.
The ruins defy belief, absolutely extraordinary, an incomprehensibly large layout of huge basalt stone columns. There was no natural basalt nearby. It was transported from the other side of the island, 20-30 miles away. The largest stone weighing 50+ tons. And yep, the legend goes, built by giant twin brothers.
Whilst there I was also lucky enough to schedule a 1 hour meeting with Micronesia's leading Archeologist, Dr Rufino Mauricio to discuss the ruins.
OMG, I'm beyond jealous and super intrigued to hear more about your visit! I've known about this place for so many years and learned that they even tried to recreate the structures there by transporting massive basalt logs that I don't even think were 50 tons and the wooden boats they used were capsized by the weight of them. They tried using wooden logs to roll the same basalt pieces onto to try and move them that way and those were crushed. How they built those structures are still a mystery by CONVENTIONAL means! Such a fascinating place that we definitely should take a closer look at!
Nan Madol eh?
