I had to commute into New York City, lower Manhattan, for 20+ years, and fortunately, I think only two times did some major event (weather for me, but the big blackout for others; excluding 9/11 of course) cause all the trains at Grand Central Terminal to shut down. I got there, saw the crowds, and went back to my office downtown and waited a few hours before the online info indicated things were back to normal. Sounds like this UK situation could be about 10x worse.
