Friggin' stinky tripod....
The only 'normal' reason a tripod should ever smell bad is if it has mold somewhere. Can happen if you're shooting in wet or humid conditions and you don't properly dry your equipment.
If it's a motorized tripod, something could have shorted out or burnt.
Now if you dripped coffee on it, dropped it in a septic tank, a dog used it as a fire hydrant, or you used it as an adult toy... Well that's a different story.
