I thought the lights might be for something nefarious like this as well. They look like black lights. They do nothing to help anyone see at night so what is their actual purpose?

What does it do to green night vision? Could it be a preventive countermeasure to guerilla warfare that the DS are wanting to start? Higher frequency colors (blues/purples) make it nearly impossible for the human eye to focus accurately on an object. Don't believe me? Go to a plaza at night where all the signs are red. They're crisp and easy to read. Now find a plaza at night where all the signs are blue. They look out of focus. Keep going toward the purple end of the spectrum and it gets worse.

Maybe the DS has night vision that works with purple lighting while the green does not. Someone here lives in NC and has a green night vision scope or something. Go see what it does to it and report back.
