Maybe he had a plastic gun or it was tucked in waist at his back and went undetected. I guess it depends on the scanner, if it scans head to toe and around the body. Could have also been an ankle gun.

Most metal detectors have lights that show the zone in which a gun was detected. Makes it really easy for the person operating the detector to know what to look for.
