I thought Greece was Europe's oldest country.
Technically Italy and Greece weren't countries back than either.
Greece wasn't a unified group, it was a bunch of city states that rarely got along.
Rome was a city state that dominated it's local area and beyond bigly.
First time you could say the Italian peninsula really became unified was after the Roman Republic fell and the Roman empire started.
So maybe you could say that they are one of the oldest countries of Europe according to modern definitions.
