So the question is, which has had a bigger effect on U.S. policy/history/politics, the transplanted Nazis, or the communist sympathizers/infiltrators.

They didn't have a bigger effect on the US . But there were HUGE investments in those countries to provide MORE CONTRAST to the socialist BLOCK ! After the cold war was over this countries kept their socialist SYSTEM and NOW the US population is demanding the same socialism !
