The guy you’re thinking of is Jacob. His wives were Rachael and Leah, and he had two concubines as well. 12 sons and 1 daughter.
To start from the beginning, Jacob grew up with his brother Esau and their father Isaac. Esau was the firstborn, but Jacob essentially swindled Esau out of his birthright. To escape retribution, Jacob fled to his uncle Laban. Labans daughters were Rachael and Leah, so Jacob basically married his cousins.
After 14 years living with Laban, Jacob figured Esau’s anger had cooled off by now, so Jacob traveled back to the land of Canaan. He sent his caravan ahead of him across a river to intercept Esau first and give him a present (basically to sweet talk Esau into not killing him). While Jacob was by himself, he met and wrestled with what he thought was a man, who after the fight revealed Himself to be God.
IMO this is meant to be taken literally. After Jacob figures out he was wrestling with God Himself, he cries out that he was undone because he had seen and touched the Lord. This doesn’t seem congruent with the interpretation that Jacob was fighting himself.
Thanks for your comment. I got the above from a theory someone posted to Substack. If I can locate it I will post it here. He explained it much better than I.
