There have been workers with work visas for at least 15 years up here in the northern part of NE, no, there aren't any local men or women who want to do the apple picking, dairy work, tree farming, etc. Smaller farms do have family help and their friend's kids, but, for the most part, those workers are needed, and USA citizens do not want to be bothered, the work is usually from "can't see till can't see", it's easier for the farmers to provide some trailers for temp housing, provide transportation, then to wait for people to not show up at 6am. We have two kinds of young people here, those that went on to train in tech or nursing or trades, some who saved and got loans to start their own landscaping, snow plowing, mechanic work.We have a good High School with a well supported trades annex, for mechanics and logging and forest management. The others are dealing drugs and getting their girlfriends pregnant, or applying for disability as soon as they get a boo boo from their jobs. Thats the facts in the NE, the immigrants that get work visas work their asses off, come back yearly, and keep to themselves. They appear to be mostly Mexican, I see them in the supermarkets when they come in vans from the farm, getting their groceries. The farmers can't afford to pay Americans, they are hanging on by a thread themselves. I have no problem with legal immigrants, I do have a problem with seeing the work ethic in the younger generation going to shit because they cant make enough money at the first job they take. All the older folks are, well, getting older, with no one following the path. There is money to be made for a youngster if he wants to hustle a few gigs, working for contractors, learning by apprenticing, but where the hell are they? But go ahead parents, keep buying your kids x boxes and pay for their i phones, get them hooked on sitting around, so they are not strong enough to work a day in the field.
