I know programmers who work for big government agencies, nationally known companies, or who do freelance consulting -- smart people -- who are completely encased in the COVID narrative, have taken multiple jabs, and despite having (so-far minor) health problems and having family members or friends with worse, aren't waking up to reality even a little yet. In these cases, I get the sense that their careers take so much focus that they simply don't pay much attention to most other things, plus of course they'd not want to express (or even hear) opinions that might cause them problems with their employers.

If this is common among programmers nationwide, we're in for serious trouble; these people are hard to replace and if the one who leaves can't spend time getting the new hire up to speed with all the poorly (or non-) documented elements and cross-connections of the institution's web of custom (or at least customized) software, well, it can be a problem.
