Just for argument's sake, the concept of freedom is a meme itself. At our roots we are social pack predators with a need to organize ourselves into semi-peaceable structures, benefitting from each other but not hurting each other. That "sweet spot" differs for each person. It's probably impossible for most npcs to find that on their own. Religious and secular institutions help people try to find a spot. We are experiencing the consequences of what happens when those institutions get unbalanced.

Well, that's blatant tyranny by way of fear through coercion... But somehow it's okay when a religious deity that claims to love you, does it?
