It may use a browser for external links.

This is what gets me about how long it took them to get an app ready...

Most apps are hybrid apps, which just load the mobile version of a website in a WebControl od the platform.

The framework then has interops to work with the camera and file system, but you literally write it once and it works everywhere, unless you write a native app.
