Nathanial Branden described this state of loneliness, by effectively breaking away from the herd, as a state of "metaphysical worthlessness" having for so long "outsourced their intellectual sovereignty" to the group/expert/authority. Thus, thinking for themselves and forming their own opinions is experienced as an existential threat which they will instinctively avoid at all costs, regardless of the facts and truths they are faced with.
