I couldn't get past his railing against the Crusades. They were fully justified.

Well maybe the first Crusade was. But they were decreasingly justifiable as time went on. When the Genoese, Venetians and Pisans got involved they became more about money than anything. And then the last Crusades that took place in Europe itself were nothing more than religious genocide. They werent even fighting Caliphates any longer.
