I believe the Russians hold the area at the moment and the Ukrainians really want it for optical and strategic reasons so the Russians are preparing the ground so they can strike heavily without killing civilians or they can fight fiercely without endangering civilians.
There is a dam (hydroelectric?) upstream which someone could blow for strategic reasons which would cause a flood in the area which has been evacuated. Looks like the Russians don't want civilians in the way of that eventuality, they would get the blame.
The people of Kherson overwhelmingly voted only a couple of weeks ago to come back under the protection of Russia. This is and always was RUSSIAN land. Russia is taking back what is rightly theirs. The Minsk Accords for the People in the Donbas as well as Kherson and Zaporozhye were NEVER honoured back in 2015. Since 2015, 16,000 Russian speaking people in these Donbas areas have been killed by AZOV and Ukrainian Military.

People are being told ‘Putin invaded Ukraine’ but they don’t say why. This war didn’t start on 24 February 2022, this started the day after Ukraine, France and Germany failed these people in the Donbas by trashing the Minsk Accord by killing the Donbas Russian speaking people. There is no other way to explain it.
Have you watched Patrick Lancaster? Patrick is an American, married to a Russian and they have two children and have lived in Ukraine for quite awhile. He is an Independent Journalist who reports on war in the European part of the world. His video of the early stages of the SMO are eye opening. He embedded with the people of the Donbas and with his cameraman, interviewed many, many of these people. Ytube has removed most but rumble and Bitchute have his videos. Be warned though. Some are raw with mutilated bodies and sad videos of family members that have just seen their love ones killed and are still lying in backyard. The interviews given by medical workers from their local hospital as well as school teachers were horrific.

I'm not going to forget the woman's body with the Swastika carved into it which was lying in the Ukraine fighter's abandoned quarters.
I've been watching the Ukraine situation via thesaker and Southfront since it started in '14. I saw lots of footage taken by the fighters of the DNR as they repelled the Ukrainian paramilitary punisher batallions back in '14 and '15.
I followed the battle of the Donetsk airport, and the battle of Debaltsevo as they happened.
When you see all of that stuff and the many images of murdered civilians including women and children, you cannot believe what the MSM tells you any more.
It's so frustrating talking to glassy eyed normies about it.
