That's just enough to get past Nov. 8 & then.....
What I've seen shows that the "25 day" figure is for what's at the pumps and does not include in-transit and/or what's still remaining in reserves. Reserves are down as we know so that can be taken into account too. Evidently the 25 days on-hand is a much reduced amount from the recent past. Its not a dire emergency, but concerning nonetheless.
Saw the same for wheat a few months ago.
Here is something nobody is thinking about - diesel generators. No - not the ones people use after a hurricane. The ones that provide backup power for large businesses, hospitals, nuclear plants (gotta keep the reactors cool if offsite power is lost), and other big things I'm not thinking about.
Out of all of those, the nuclear plants worry me the most. If a co-op or local power company that provides power to a nuclear plant has issues and goes down, the plant will go on diesel generators. That diesel supply is finite. If it runs out before the power comes back on it will not be pretty. There are 92 working nuclear plants in the US.
Before anyone says that they will be fine because they are cooled by the ocean, or lakes, or ponds - that water is pumped in and out, which obviously requires electricity.
Sure - losing backup generators at hospitals will be catastrophic, but what happens when nuclear plants start melting down? And it isn't just bad from the radioactive release, but the people in that path will be terrified. Tens of thousands will be stranded on highways when they start to flee, and looting will be rampant. Each plant knows how many people are in their "zones" if a plant has a release. Only they (and the NRC) will know how many people the radiation could affect. Hint - even if that is only 10-15k in a 10 mile radius that's a million+ people at risk when the diesel runs out.
Also no diesel would be bad news for the National Guard, who will likely be deployed to quell civil disturbances and to help get food, water, and security to the people. Most of their vehicles will run on diesel, as will their generators.
So - no trucks to bring food and supplies, no trucks to spread the diesel across the country, severely hampered NG presence, little security, hospitals in danger of losing patients with loss of power, nuclear plants in danger of melting down due to the same - Biden could conceivably be considered deadlier than Stalin or Mao before this is done.
I think if the diesel shortage is true and worsens - it may be the precipice.
Could? It will. Without diesel fuel, no food deliveries. So far there seem to be as many or more trucks on the road. Maybe it is fear monger I NG to panic people.
I've been seeing the whole "we're going to run outa diesel soon" & "The east coast has weeks left of diesel" stuff for months now.
It hasn't happened yet
I hope it doesn't turn into the "we're all going to die when the ice caps melt next year and the oil dries up" shit that has been peddled for decades.
Correct. "Peak oil" was supposed to have come 50 years ago, yet here we are, using more than ever.
As a trucker, that has no home except my truck. This concerns me most. Lack of diesel or lack of freight supply. Like many, one month of no work would collapse my house of cards. It is what it is I guess!
