Either whatever they had on him has been taken out of play. Or he’s jumping ship to save his neck when the proverbial axe comes down on mainstream media.

Taking himself out. Either pre-planned and coordinated with the good guys, or trying to make his own escape pod. Probably the latter, but we won't know until later.
