No one claims the church “belongs “ to the pope. The pope us the head pastor and has spiritual authority to forgive and retain sins and bind and loose (along with the other bishops).
That’s just sad. No man can forgive you if your sins. We as people can forgive each other. Brothers and sisters. Only God/Jesus can forgive sin in His eyes. That’s the problem with you Catholics, you’ve placed a normal man between you and God. There is no pope in the Bible. He is just a normal man. Who is a sinner just like you and me. Nothing more special than you are. To God we are equal. He already choose us. Now we must choose Him. Keep man out of it.
“The sins you forgive are forgiven, the sins you retain are retained.” The idea here is that ON BEHALF OF GOD, the apostles, then bishops, and priests can act “in the person of Christ” to absolve sin. This is to avoid having to do public confessions of sin. (“Confess your sins, one to another.”)
It’s not sad - it’s what the early church did up until Luther.
