This is so true. I never understood why people were so afraid of being called an 'ist' or a 'phobe.' You know whether or not you are those things. And there's no convincing a mentally ill leftist you aren't, regardless. Just shrug, say, 'so?' and move on.
A few reasons, all fairly closely connected:
Being called a racist justifies violence and harassment against you.
It can cost you your job, it can cost you good medical care (it wasn't so long ago there were stories of black nurses giving bad medical treatments to whites) and it can cost you all the prospects. And who stands up for you? Who gives you that care, or that job, who protects you against harassment, who rules in favor of you in court?
There are legitimate reasons why people don't want to be called a racist, especially if they know they aren't one.
The sad reality is that we have gotten too loose on protecting speech that we deem offensive / unattractive / etc. because it affects someone other than us, or it affects the other side, so on, and we have gotten too many activist judges who give slaps on the wrist for offenders or clears them because it's "too hot" to hold them to account.
I think it has more to do with people choosing not to engage. I myself don't say anything because there's no point. ESEPCAILLY online.
Unless a productive conversation is going to take place, there's nothing to be gained by engaging. Just reject their idea and move on... as you suggest. Unless someone is kicking down your door FORCING you to listen to their bullshit, there's no reason to stoop to their level.
Yeah, this makes sense to me.
Because some people can lose their livelihoods if they speak out
Depending on the situation, I understand why they would be quiet if that were the case. If they've got a family, mortgage, responsibilities, etc. But even still, at some point, a person must stop being afraid and stand for what is right. Otherwise, evil just wins and continues to do so.
