Technically Hitler was voted in via democratic vote too. The better take away is that it's not a democracy but a republic and the power to end representation in government is only through submission either via force or demoralization / complacency / indoctrination. So the focus should always be on a fair election process, moralization through community, faith, free speech etc. and the ability to organize and defend against force.
