Thanks, that WAS ~20 years ago. There's a much longer version, and that was really the last month where it was a "rock bottom" moment.
It ensured that I was out of any temptation to follow most of my high school friends that got into coke and meth and led me to meeting my wife of almost 10 years now.
Ties to a separate story, a few years before that happened, I fell into a coma for 3 days. I had an encounter with what I could only describe as a "guardian angel", I don't remember much about it except the lasting message of "Do not worry. Everything ALWAYS works out exactly the way it is supposed to." I was an atheist at that point, so when I work up I tried to find the 'nurse' that I dreamed of, and there was not a single nurse that even remotely matched the description. The story about the roommate was the second confirmation though...
