Think about this. Russia blew up a bridge as they left this area. This has left the Ukraine military no way of getting across the river. What country has Russia amassed 40,000 troops in to protect it? Belarus. Can Russia enter Belarus via Russia? Yes. What city is very, very close to Belarus? Kiev.
The Russians are waiting on the ground to freeze. This could happen at any time soon. General Winter also brings about leaves falling off trees. What are hiding in the trees? Who will need to build fires to keep warm and signal their positions? Not Russia. Kherson was infested with Nazis and their days are numbered. The Ukraine military cannot go forward as the Dneiper is in front of them. Can they go back? Possibly but that’s suicide. They’re trapped with 60,000 needing supplies and munitions. With no enemy to fight and the Russian military being refreshed, General Winter will be a pleasant reprieve from the meat grinder Zelensky has been throwing them into. There are riots across Europe and people are getting a small taste of no gas for heating. Financially Europe is gone. There are countries now not wanting to send any more money or weapons. US supplied equipment is being bought out of mothballs and is almost 20-30 years old.

Quite right. IMHO, the Russian government knows the slow grind of battle can lead to fatigue. Time is a factor that Russia is weighing and it is to the Russian's advantage to wait and let the West and NATO get tired of funneling money into Ukraine. Putin knows Americans are waking up to this money pit in Ukraine. So, the attitude in Moscow is to establish good defensive lines and move military assets behind the Dnieper River and wait for winter to arrive. The Ukrainian people are going to be really impacted by the cold weather and the lack of heat and running water. This is going to cause the United States and EU to really come to terms with their own energy issues. Time is on Russia's side.
Another thing is without heating and water, there will be another refugee crisis heading to Europe. They can barely cope with the refugees from war torn countries in the ME and it estimated that 8 million will descend on Europe from Ukraine. But while there is some gas reserves for this winter, they are saying that next winter will be much, much worse.
