In what way did Russia "try to take Kiev"? They massed in front, returned fire when fired upon, and pinned the local armed forces in place so they couldn't interfere with Russia's operations in the Donbass. Purpose served, the Russians withdrew. Their intention was to pin down Ukrainian forces and in that they were successful. You can't grade the Russians according to a test you might fail.
