Had a friend over last Sunday. Causally said "won't be long now" after petting my old girl.

Immediately followed by "oh shit. Sorry." As my eyes immediately welled.

He's right obviously, but I don't do well thinking about it. Not ready. Not even close. It's going to hurt a lot.

I’m sure he didn’t think before he spoke but you’d think..? I have a very old friend, 96, who can’t understand how his daughter can love her two dogs so much. I can’t understand how anyone can make eye contact with any creature and not see the intelligence inside of them.
