Bauer is a German word meaning farmer. Mayer Amschel Bauer went into the money lending busness and so people could find him he hung a sign outside his premises. The sign was a symbol because not too many people could read at the time.

I believe the sign was a red six-pointed star and Mayer called it a shield. In German "red shield" comes out as "Roth Schild". Mayer Amschel Bauer adopted Rothschild as his surname.

Neu Bauer means New Farmer.
