Obviously, God knew we would hit a point where we would become advanced enough that everything was easily accessible i.e. food/shelter/clothing/security/health and at that point society would begin to turn away from Him.
Maybe, God used our DNA to leave his signature, so that when we got to the point of easy street we would also be to the point in our technology that we had mapped out the Genome and would discover the God gene [VMAT2].
It seems plausible that a group of elitist satanists hell bent on controlling the world and battling it out with God would want to do something about this Gene.
From my understanding the God Gene [VMAT2] is said to be what allows us to be drawn to God. If you can cause a mutation within that gene then it seems like you might be able to cause ppl to stop looking to the spiritual realm for help/guidance. In doing so, this would make ppl more susceptible to looking towards man/government as their North or savior.

What may seemed complicated is most likely more simple like this. Evil has a way of making us think they're genius at work but they're one of the most foolish ones w/ simple direct emotions like jealousy and greed to steer their actions.
