The "average" included many thousands of babies who died young, as well as children who died of childhood diseases and other causes. There were a good number of people who lived a long time. My immigrant ancestor was born over 250 years ago. He was 91 when he died. His son was almost 80, the next generation was about 90, the next generation was almost 80, and the next generation was 90. Other lines of my ancestry have similar numbers for a large part of them. I fully expect to live well past 100.
Of course, as far as I know, most of my ancestors were Christians.
