If you wanna get technical, they aren't on the "left" of anything either, really. That's just a conventional term left over from the French Revolution in 1789. The National Assembly happened to be split into revolutionaries on the left side of the hall and the king's supporters on the right side.

It' more of a personal matter for me because I find they have very little "liberal" views and they are all about conforming to one type of thought.
