One theory (I'm just stating it, not endorsing it) is that a rogue planet called Nibiru entered the solar system on its 3600-year orbit and is causing tidal stresses on all the plants in our system. Earth, having tectonic plates, is reacting to the tidal forces. Don't know if it's true, just what I'm hearing on a couple of sites.
Nutty as a fruitcake. It has never been observed in history. We can't see far enough to observe it, and if it is at an unobservable distance, it will have no effect on the Earth.
Hey, I did say I didn't endorse the theory, just putting it out there in this conversation. The OP asked about causes of multiple volcanoes at this time, and this is just one of several possibilities. As to "never been observed in history"... well the Sumerians observed something very much like that and wrote about it. But I yield to your superior knowledge on these matters.
Yes, Zecharia Sitchin made such an argument based on ancient records. It is reasonable to think that something happened to prompt their record of it. But it is a long jump to conclude it was a planet with a 3600-year orbit, following a cometary orbit. It would be farther out than the Oort Cloud.
In any case, its gravitational effect on the Earth would be nil, if it is so far away it cannot be detected.
Some sources claim that it is as large as Saturn and that its orbit takes it between Mars and Jupiter's orbits. Again, not advocating the theory, just putting it out there. If it were that large, it might have some gravitational effects on earth.
As weird as this theory sounds, it may have some legs to it I'm afraid.
