I think Musk already had a number of sources on the inside.

Probably did his due diligence prior to purchase.

Hopefully some of his resources were on the back end (IT) so he would he able to recover deleted files (evidence).

They thought they were deleting files, but in turn I'm betting those files were not deleted but sent to another location for review.
