If the ridiculousness of all of this nonsense doesn't wake up most people, perhaps we have reached the pinnacle of human development and gone off a cliff. It may be that our race has to experience cyclic hardships for folks to remember to appreciate what we have. This is why I think history is such an important field for everyone to study, it helps us remember the past mistakes, so that we aren't caught in an endless cycle of elation and despair.
