You definitely pay a price for being honest and maintain integrity. I got set back in my career tremendously when I first started because I reported a supervisor for fraud, and mostly because another coworker kept telling me about it. I naively reported it without considering that the employee who told me about it wouldn't join me in the complaint. A few decades later that same supervisor went on to become head of a Federal agency.
