That’s the nature of business. Particularly sales. A childhood friend had very wealthy but down to earth parents. They had started a lawn mowing company with just a few mowers and one worker, and eventually ended up with contracts for landscaping entire military bases in the state. Along with building their own nursery and growing trees that didnt pay off for years, they never bought a mansion or a Ferrari. They just improved the house they had always had. The father smoked joints all day driving around checking his different businesses, the mother did the books out of a single wide trailer they used as an office. Some of the nicest folks I had around growing up. But ruthless at business.
He taught me so much about how to really succeed, shit they don’t teach you in school.
Ultimately it boils down simple.
If you stop growing and become satisfied, you will fail. And nice guys lose. Always lose. There are no friends in business relationships. There are acquaintances, people you may trust, but when money is involved, they aren’t friends.
When you own a business, and it’s your sole source of income, no one is going to look out for you but yourself. Survival of the fittest. To succeed you cannot be nice. You have to be selfish.
Disclaimer: good businessman usually means a ruthless money grubber.
