My dear, you need to run some research on what to feed. Don't let them tell you. Profit over care is what they do.
16 years old husky jumping over fence every week is what I got. I feed raw meat and bones. Oldest dog is Australian and 32. Raw food without vaccines.
I fed her raw: meat tripe, hearts etc. She was very fit and healthy till she got sick, really sick. I think one batch was contaminated. Tried all kinds of remedies to no avail. Took her to the vet as a last resort because I was worried I'd be accused of neglecting her if I didn't. You have no idea how hard I tried to get her back on track.
Oh, good, you know. If you have holistic vets, look for them. Most vets just poison, cut and burn. The only time now I will bring them in is neuter spay, or if they suffer too much, let them go.
I don't trust them.
I don't trust them either. Problem is if you don't take a sick dog to a vet you could be prosecuted for neglect. I had a great vet who was totally trustworthy, but she retired and sold her practice. This is why I won't get another dog: getting affordable safe raw food is difficult, can't go on holiday and leave her with a carer if you don't boost annually. Just like the flu shots for humans, these boosters impact immunity. Saw the deterioration in another dog I had and discontinued. Its all a scam.
When the mom is pregnant, have a blood test done on her to show what immunity she’s passing on to the pups at birth through the first feedings which contain colostrum. This test is called a nomograph and identifies when the pups need their parvo and distemper shots. These are fatal and the pups will need protection. After the correctly-timed vaccination/s, have a blood test (called a titer) done on the pup to see if its immune system is protecting the pup against these.
Then you worry about rabies. It should be given without any other vaccine and the dog be given benedryl a couple hours before the shot. A month later, if you’re in a state that allows it, give the 3-year rabies booster. If you’re in a state where the rabies law states the 3-year shot has to be given 12 months after the first shot, then be sure to give the benedryl and hope your dog isn’t one that will have a bad vaccine reaction. If you’re in a state that requires yearly rabies—work to get the law changed or find out if a rabies titer is acceptable. A rabies titer is very expensive, but vets get their own blood tested, so why not a dog?
Boost the distemper/parvo the first year after, then titer the dog every 3 years.
The dog should be set until the next 3-year rabies booster.
I’m not a vet, but this vaccine schedule is based on the work of Dr. Ron Schultz at the university of Wisconsin vet school. CAVIDS is the website to look for. They run the nomograph and titer tests a lot cheaper than the commercial services charge and give a report with recommendations.
Do this with consulting a trusting vet. They are out there. I have the blood drawn by a tech and the blood spun down to the serum needed and mail the package myself priority to save money.
I just took a trip and need to leave pets because I have not seen my family for 3.5 years. Reunion with mom and sis. They want kitchen sink vaccines to board. Talked to neighbor and paid them to watch the dogs at home.
Where there is a will, there is always a way. Ashlanddog knew me too well now. Ashland has 3 dogs.
Poisoned food kills the kidneys. But dogs know from thousands of years of eating carcasses how to smell it and avoid meat gone bad. Wonder if the meat you got had been vaccinated.
How old was she?
Not sure, she was a rescue. Probably around 10. Sweetest, most affectionate and intelligent girl ever, came to be known as our village cuddlehound loved by all. Absolute angel, wish I could post her photo.
To clarify, you have an Australian shepherd that is 32 yo?
No. I have a husky that is 16 and 4 foot fence every week.
32 yo Australian Shepherd is the longest living dog. Google longest living dog and you will find him.
32?! Wow
Mine is only 16. The oldest dog is name Bluey (Australian Shepherd). It will take my another decade and a half to get there.
