I had to look up where it is, and what this "The New School" is, and found this:
The New School is a private research university in New York City. It was founded in 1919 as The New School for Social Research with an original mission dedicated to academic freedom and intellectual inquiry and a home for progressive thinkers.
(pardon for being from Wikipedia, but what better place to find a description of some leftist organization? :) )
They probably got extra credit for participating in the protest :)
That's a right description. I grew up around the area.
