Looks like a huge part of the US is going to get seriously cold. I have a few hints to make it more bearable, but it will cost money on fuel. Do not keep the thermostat too low, it will keep turning the furnace on and off on and off, it takes less fuel to maintain a temp than to keep trying to warm a cold house. Use blankets on windows, especially the windows facing the wind, it aint pretty, but it will keep the warmth in. Keep cooking, a busy oven warms the house. Shut rooms off that you are not using during the day, bedrooms, spare rooms, etc. Wear long underwear. Don't drink too much alcohol, it warms you for a minute, but your body will lose heat because it opens up your capillaries and allows heat to escape. Please be careful if you go outdoors, once it gets below 10 degrees it is serious cold. Please dont keep your dogs and cats outdoors, or make sure there is a real secure place for them with insulation. Radiant heat is better than convection heat, I hope you have a source for it. If you have chickens in a big barn, make sure they are in a small area so that they can keep each other warm. In my home we have some large cages in the basement if it gets too bad for too long. Do not lick a metal post to prove something, your tongue will rip. Some cayenne pepper mixed with vaseline or bag balm rubbed on your feet with good socks and boots will keep your feet warm, it does not take too much, a pinch will do to a gob of vaseline If I think of anything else, I will post it I've lived "Beyond the Wall" for 35 years, and have not froze yet. Keep your faucets dripping, and remember the out pipes can freeze up, some folks put anti freeze in the toilet for this reason.
