I would say if you want to guess which way the power goes, remember when they were trying to impeach Trump over his call to Ukraine. They wanted Zelensky to go along with their bullshit to incriminate him and he refused. Said he never felt Trump was trying to pressure him or bribe him to do anything. It suggests he's not beholden to the Democrat party, nor does he fear any backlash

Forget the money he keeps shamelessly demanding. Look at all the high profile visitors that have been sent from the US to Ukraine. It's been a total charm offensive to keep Zelensky happy and build up his image as a superstar world leader. We don't even know if hes really in Ukraine.
