In reality, it has nothing to do with the birth of Christ and everything to do with incorporating pagan traditions into Christianity by the Roman Catholic Church.
Protestants tried breaking away and getting back to the Bible and the Bible alone AKA Sola Scriptura, and the celebration of Christmas was even banned in the United States once upon a time, but those days are long gone.
I used to think it was a Roman Catholic thing as well, but according to Bible scholar Michael S Heiser, the date of Dec 25, although not Biblical, was proposed for other reasons by early church leaders, pre-Roman Catholic times. See NAKED BIBLE podcast Christmas episode from 1 or 2 years ago.
Technically it is a Roman Catholic thing as they are the reason for the current calander being used. I am Coptic Orthodox and we celebrate Christmas on January 7th as we use the old calander.
