I'm a Christian based largely on evidence and reason (with faith thrown in to hold it all together :) )

Right, we use evidence and reason, that's why I'm a believer as well! But even with evidence and reason, sometimes people choose to not believe. And sometimes they do. I've learned it's ultimately a choice.
