I don't live in Florida now, but lived in poor areas most of my life there as an adult. The last place was in an area called Pine Hills, but its nickname was Crime Hills. I worked overnights, but it wasn't unusual to see the roads blocked off and the police helicopter over head. The condo complex had a real strict background check and the old people running the HOA were like the Gestapo, but it was actually a good thing. The complex was very well maintained and built very well. I bought a condo there for 25K, another for 11k (Sold it) and a third there to move back there for 18K
Before Condos I owned a house in Sanford Fla. of Zimmerman/ Martian fame, paid my 30 year loan in 16 then sold it off after 2 years to go condo. Prices are crazy in Orlando, but not as crazy as Nashville, we just rent
I rent an apartment in a 3 story house that's been split into 6 apartments... Typical set up in New England... lived in Florida 30 years before moving here and rented both apartments and houses there... Gulf coast from St. Pete to Spring Hill... It's worse here than in Florida...
Yeah, I miss Florida, but my wife is Filipino so we have a house there and then returned to the USA because of the Plandemic... I wish we were still in the Philippines, but we have children in the family to support and my SS would support me and my wife, but not extended family. Wife got a job in Nashville and I went back to work, but a security guard job is easy money lol
I'm raising my 14 year old daughter alone... Her mom died in 15. Her mom was in FL. we were here in New England... also on a fixed income but I can't work due to a bad heart and emphysema... We do ok and we live a comfortable life... Cheers my fren...
Yes, I never earned a lot of money, but lived a simple life. Sorry to hear of your loss, but you are going to be ok and can be proud of going it alone as a parent.

Note the name of the Complex, the golf coarse was built over 40 years ago. Notice no trash anywhere... https://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/5505-Hernandes-Dr-Apt-237_Orlando_FL_32808_M67996-36385
