Lydon even admitted over the years that the entire Sex Pistols thing was a huge, fake money grab. The dumbass that died in that band (Sid? I think) was the only one who “lived” up the image… until the day he croaked from an OD.
I think Lydon had some hopes for the Pistols, especially in the States. But Malcolm McLaren was a coked-up trashbag and thought it would be hilarious to have them play country bars in the South instead of clubs like CBGB's in New York (which was the natural fit for them). McLaren wanted the press and the notoriety that would follow from having them play in totally the wrong venues and it backfired in a big way, causing Lydon to quit.
(They were all coked-up or junked-up at that point. I just mention McLaren in that sense because he was supposed to be managing them, making good deals for them).

Lydon was never shy about his disdain for socialists either.
"Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?"
