Many people don't know the huge amount of tea thrown into Boston Harbor in 1773. American colonists dumped more than 92,000 pounds of tea overboard.
Can you imagine that in an era without cranes, without lifting devices and most of the cargo was stored dry below decks (having to be hauled out and lifted)?
92,000 lbs is a LOT. Due to having to be hand carried, the tea crates likely weighed no more than 100 lbs each. That would be 920 crates of tea dumped.
If colonists dumped 1 crate of tea every 10 seconds continuously... they would have been on the ship for 2-1/2 hours working hard.
A lot of other people also know that the reason they tossed the tea is because they really valued the sugar.
Book-keepers and merchants drank tea because of the caffeine, which helped them cook the books better for the British Empire.
Sugar was used to flavor the tea, sure. But the Colonists were more upset about the sugar-stamp taxes not because they used it in their tea, but for their rum.
The British Empire was taking away the Pubs and Inns of the Colonialists -- taking away their recreation time in order to turn more profits under the British Empire. The worker class revolted at the skyrocketing price of rum, and the Boston Teaparty was its summation. If there's no tea, the Lobsterbacks wouldn't have need for the tea, lowering the price temporarily.
Colonists knew what they were doing. They were directly targeting the reliance on caffeine of the British Book-keepers while sending a message. Take the number crunchers out of commission and the numbers on the books go wonky, hurting the Imperial British Economy with surprisingly subversive effectiveness.
It's a lesson of what happens when a tyrant takes away the bread and circuses.
Thanks for the stats! There were several ships if I recall correctly.
As much as I appreciate the notion, dumping papers isn't the nicest to the already cesspool that is the Boston Harbor.
But this does give me an idea.
Come next election, why not just stuff the Mail-In Ballot boxes to the brim with 1040 forms?
If the boxes are full, they can't shove more fraudulent ballots in them, right?
Great Idea!
Excellent idea!
