Could be acoustics of the enclosed space, and nothing to do with the weapon. Or maybe he was using some different ammo?

This is true. My AR isn't especially loud, but under the firing line roof of my outdoor range, the sound is reflected back down and concentrated, making it dangerously noisy.

Maybe that makes it an "assault roof?"
