They can shut off gas but it is more problematic. As far as I know there are no gas smart meters so shutting down an individual home will need a visit. Switching things back on may also need supervision to ensure that no air has replaced the gas in the pipes because that could cause an explosion.
If the shut-off were to be permanent that would work but if you wanted to turn it back on then you could have issues. If air gets into the part of the system that no longer has access to the pressurised gas supply then if air and gas mix then conditions are right to produce an explosion.
When a home is destroyed because of a "gas explosion" it is not just caused by burning gas. It happens because the ratio of air and gas was just right for an explosion to occur.
