Totally. I was being semi-flippant and really just pointing out that the lockdown induced baby boom never happened. I totally get millennials choosing not to have kids. Sadly, I think a significant percentage of the decision is based on $. Kids, while more rewarding than anything else I have in my life, cost a lot. Totally worth it IMO, but agree everyone can make that choice. My main disappointment is with societal inflation and ridiculous costs of living in many parts of the world making the joys of a "fruitful family" a stressful proposition.
I think it’s a mixture of the cost of kids and people becoming more selfish. I think we judge that term, “selfish”, a little harshly in society. I don’t think choosing to not have kids is selfish, in some ways it’s selfless!
Take someone like me who is on the fence about kids. I’m not doing it from a selfish point of view (even though admittedly, I do enjoy my hobbies and free time), I just think this world is headed down a strange path. Until my confidence in it improves, why would I want to bring a child that I love into the world to potentially deal with the hardships?
Realize that’s a depressing thought, the last few years have just taken it out of me is all. I have faith in this planet and the people in it, but the vaccine being mandated and forcing me to move really made me realize how deep the rot goes. Still praying for the best
You, my fren, summed it up beautifully here, using common sense, logic and reason. Just bc we CAN procreate doesn't mean we should. So many factors to consider. Welfare recipients shouldn't procreate for the sheer gratification. Neither should discerning citizens skeptical of the future of our world. Just bc you can doesn't mean you should.
Before our child was born, my wife and I thought the same. We weren't being selfish, but rather selfless (at least in our eyes). Do we really want to raise a child in this F'd up clown world we're seeing today??
As said child has grown, we've seen the greatness and purity in the child, made long-lasting friendships with other parents, and experienced a world we couldn't have imagined otherwise. Parenting, teaching common sense values, above anything including the ABCs is most important.
So don't rush to do it simply bc you can. But understand that every being brought into this world has dealt w/ hardships. How we teach them to deal w/ those hardships is most important.
Again, best to you fren and use your own judgement. We were born with free will, no matter how hard others may try to strip it from us
