Would he have stayed alive long enough for the police to show if he panicked, and asked for the police because a crazy person broke in with a hammer, right in front of said hammer-wielding crazy person?

I’m agreeing with you. The fact he called should have clued the operator in. People don’t just call 911 if nothing is wrong. Where I live if you call 911 for any reason police come and check on you.
