Those recovery vehicles and the crews are walking dead. There is no way Russia will allow them to be moved out. It’s not like they can send in haulage trucks for recovery.
Yeah it's called a CHARV, basically the bottom half is a Chally 2 and the top fitted out with crane and other lifting, repairing gear.
To be fair you can get a Chally2 engine out quite quickly, I forget the fastest time ever but if I said around 1 hr give or take it would be right, that's if you have the crews with the experience!
One of the bigger supply problems with the M1 Abrahams will be the supply of fuel! The M1 Abraham is a thirsty beast and has the least battle range out of them (Chally2, Leopard 2 and M1 Abrahams) and each have a large thermal picture.
To be very fair, in the right hands and back in the day they were a good bit of kit, hydro suspension, decent engines and a decent armament, but that experience took a long time to get!
Here's the CHARV https://yandex.com/images/search?from=tabbar&text=challenger%202%20recovery%20vehicle&pos=5&img_url=http%3A%2F%2Fphotos.smugmug.com%2FMilitary%2FTANKFEST-2018-Part-1-Modern-vehicles%2Fi-XbNfBBz%2F0%2F85751d13%2FXL%2FTankfest2018part1-215-XL.jpg&rpt=simage&lr=144942
These tanks and crews fought in the desert. The terrain in Ukraine is far different. Have you seen the posts on IntelSlavaZ or Intel Republic on telegram? These guys are posting videos direct from the frontline. Even videos of the unmanned drones as they hit their targets - usually tanks.
Mate I was stationed in Germany for 6 yrs, and was trained in that environment, yes I know it was the desert ta, 14 Brit Chally2's is around 1 Sqn worth with different main armament size to the M1 Abrahams,
Supply of spares was and always will be a sticking point.
Crews with little or no experience won't stand a chance.
And yes you are correct, top down attacks are where the vehicles are most vulnerable, as it's the least armoured area of all of them.
As always the Russian T72's even the T90 is fairly basic compared to our vehicles it just there's so many of them!
21 mins in a hot war with the Soviets back in the day, and we knew what we were doing as we trained many times a year, and every few years pretty much the entire lot was mobilised including the Americans.
