Close. Elon co-founded X.com but was replaced by some dude from Intuit in their first year. When X and Confinity (Paypal was only a service of Confinity) merged Elon came back as CEO until he was again ousted, but this time for Peter Thiel.

It looks like Thiel technically started Paypal as we know it because he focused more on the money transfer service, but both made a ton of money when eBay bought it.

I remember this going down, and I was thinking at the time that Confinity could be big - and then it was gone.
